Sunburn treatments involve several methods and modes arriving at common destination i.e., treating the infected person and relieving the individual from serious pain. To treat severe sunburn many approaches are employed. External applications play a vital role in eliminating the lesions and blisters created by the sunlight or the ultra-violet rays. Spraying of witch hazel over the burns may give temporary relief from the pain and itching.
Commercial products such as Pepto-Bismol, calamine lotion, Noxzema are used to treat an individual from severe sun burn.
Some of the skin soothers like butter, vitamin-e oil are also directly applied over the skin. Skin soothers have direct impact over the sunburns or even on the blisters caused from those sunburns. These remove the numbness and thus relieving the patient from recurrent and severe pain. It also helps in the prevention of formation of pus inside the blisters. It greatly inhibits the inflammation of sunburns resulting in prevention of bulging of the flab of skin.
Cool water bath with added amount of baking soda prevents the itching thus helping in the treatment of the severe sunburns.

Intake of certain steroids may also prevent the extent of the damages of these blisters. Cortisone and allied steroids are given with good effect in several severe skin ailments. Steroids are also used in the form of sprays, creams and ointments for the treatment of local areas of the sunburns and skin blisters. Studies are also carried out in finding out quick methods to treat severe sunburn.
